Ringdroid – make any song your ringtone

Ringdroid lets you create personal ringtones, alarms, and notification sounds from existing music/audio files and record new ones using your Android device.

Download and Install Ringdroid on your phone. Once you launch the app, you will see a list of songs on your device. To view all the sounds on your device, tap the Action icon on the top right corner and choose Show all audio. Then select the song that you want as your ringtone. Once selected, decide the start point and the end point for your ringtone by moving the sliders above and below. Now save the clip by tapping the Save  icon. That’s it!

You can save it as a ringtone (default) or use a contact-specific ringtone, or use it for your alarm, or even use it for various notifications – a different one for each! So, which song will use as your ringtone now?

Share your current location – Google Maps

Very often, we need to share our current location with a friend  or relative. Either it is to direct them to where you are, or in some cases, even in an emergency.

Google Maps now has an option to share your current location with anyone immediately. Just open the Google Maps app and go to the hamburger menu on the left top. You will find the Share Location option. Tap on that and then you will be shown all options to share your current location. You may share by SMS, GMail, Whatsapp or any other option that you have on your device.

When sharing, you can set the time for sharing too – 1 hour, 2 hours or even permanently, till such time you shut it off – the last option would be very useful for kids to show their parents where they are, or for people visiting unknown places and want their friends or kin to know where exactly they are.

Very useful to convey your location in good times and bad times!

 

Unified Ticketing System – UTS

CaptureIf you travel by train, you know how difficult it is to stand in queue and buy suburban, unreserved ticket. UTS, by Indian Railways, solves this painful problem.

UTS is the official mobile ticketing app for booking unreserved tickets. Paperless ticketing has been enabled in entire Chennai suburban section, entire Mumbai suburban section and New Delhi – Palwal section. In addition, Season and Platform Tickets are also available.

All you have to do is to download the app, assign a userid and password and you are ready to go. Just add an amount to the UTS digital wallet through your Credit Card or Internet Banking. The next time you travel, you can book your tickets on the way to the station. Be sure to choose the paperless ticket option, so that you get your tickets on your mobile. When asked, you can show the ticket from your mobile directly!

Google Maps – Timeline

Forgot where you were on the 19th of last month? Simple, the Timeline feature of Maps will jog your memory. On the Google Maps app, tap on the Hamburger Menu on the left top, and then tap on Your Timeline and see your whereabouts in detail. Be sure that you have enabled this feature and rest assured that only YOU can view your timeline.

You have options to add a place, delete a day, show your Google Contacts’ addresses on the map and even show your Google Photos that you have clicked on the way, on your timeline.

And if you feel that Google already knows enough about you and you don’t want it to know more of your travel plans, you may turn the feature off in the timeline settings.

GBoard – the smart keyboard from Google

captureGBoard, the smart keyboard from Google has been upgraded. Apart from the various stuff that all keyboards do, predictive text, swipe, multiple language support, etc., GBoard also allows you to Search Google and share, right from your keyboard!

For example, when you are typing a mail or text or Whatsapp on your phone, sometimes, you need to give directions and sometimes you need to give a link to a product or service, or even a website. Doing that from your phone can be pretty tedious – exit the message, go to the link and copy the link address and then get back to your original message and paste it. GBoard has a Google link on the top left of the keyboard – if you tap on that, you can search almost anything in Google (including Maps), go to the link and then with a single tap, include that link in your message!

Pretty neat and straightforward. Try it out, you will be saving lots of time and energy!!  Installing a keyboard is pretty simple on Android. Just go to the Play Store, install the keyboard and then open the settings area and choose Language and keyboard, and select the new keyboard of your choice.
