Android allows users to install a variety of Launchers and File Managers. One of the better ones is Solid Explorer which is a Solid File Manager, which has many more options than the Android Stock File Manager.

It has a wonderful, user-friendly design which is intuitive and a pleasure to use. You can secure folders with AES encryption which makes it very safe to use. Besides, it has a Trash Bin from where you could recover your accidentally deleted files immediately.

You could use it for copying, moving, sorting, encrypting and archiving all the files on your phone. Sorting based on File Type, Size, Modification Date and File Names is all built-in. There is a storage analyser that allows you to quickly identify files and folders which take the maximum space on your mobile.

The app supports major cloud storage services like Google Drive, OneDrive and also protocols such as FTP, SFTP, etc. and lets you stream media to cast-enabled devices.

Solid Explorer is free to download and use with ads. You can also use in-app purchases to remove ads for a smoother experience.

Android allows us to set the default screen time-out upto 10 minutes. This means that whenever your phone is idle, the screen will automatically time-out between 15 seconds to 10 minutes of inactivity. There are many situations when we may not want the screen to time-out automatically in 10 minutes, e.g. if you are making a speech (and using the phone for cues) or a presentation. Native android does not give you any option for that.

This is where Screen Alive comes in handy. It allows you to keep the screen alive for extended periods of time, without any automatic time-outs. It is a very simple, free app. Just download it and set the time for which you want the screen to be alive and you are done!

Beware though, that if you keep the screen alive for long periods of time, it could drain your battery very quickly, especially if you have a large, hi-def screen. So do use it with caution and only when needed.

Your computer, without the computer
We use many apps on our computer, which we are familiar with, on a day to day basis. When travelling or when we do not have access to our own computer, it becomes inconvenient to use another app on someone else’s machine. E.g. if we are accustomed to using Google Chrome as our browser and we do not have access to the same elsewhere, it could be disconcerting and painful to use another browser. That is where Portable Apps come in.
The PortableApps.com Platform™ is a full-featured portable software system that ties all your portable apps together and lets you build your own custom portable app suite for use in your synced cloud folder, on your local PC, or on a portable USB drive. And it is kept separate from your local apps. The PortableApps.com Platform is 100% Free. Free to use. Free to share. And fully open source.
What it does is that it creates an entire suite of commonly used apps, in compressed form which you can save to your pen-drive, USB drive or on the cloud. Whenever you need to use these apps, you may use them directly off the USB drive or the Cloud without having the need to install them on the local machine.

Over a period of time, we tend to accumulate a lot of duplicate files on our computers. The duplicates not only hog our disk space but also reduce the speed of our access to our hard drive.

Duplicate Cleaner does just what it says. It scans our hard disk and identifies all the duplicate files in a single folder or in multiple folders. You can then choose to quarantine the duplicates or just send them to the recycle bin directly. It is that simple!

To instal Duplicates Cleaner, just go to the Microsoft Store and Search for Duplicates Cleaner. There are many out there, so look for the one with the icon displayed here. Click on Get and it will be downloaded and installed on your system. Be sure to run through the settings to optimize your cleaning the way you want it and you are good to go!

There is a free version and a paid version for advanced features. But for most of the time, the free version has worked for me, so no need to go for the paid version.
